 Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) composed the volume of sevensongs entitled Gypsy Songs,Op. 55, for the excellent German tenor Gustav Walter (1834-1910), a member ofthe WienerHofoper (Vienna Court Opera). He thus wrote them to the German translations ofpoemsadapted for him by their author, Czech poet Adolf Hejduk. The original Simrockedition from1880 only came with a text in German; a further edition from 1881 now containedCzech andEnglish versions. The songs proved to be extremely popular with singers andaudiences alike;the fourth one ("Songs my mother taught me") became one of the mostfamous of its kind inthe world repertoire. In this volume, the songs are transposed for lower voices(alto, baritone).The vocal text is here published in its Czech, English and German versions.This title is partof the First Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.
