Composed in Paris in 1938, Martinu (1890 – 1959) considered the work so private that he declined to publish it during his lifetime. It was only a few months before his death that he finally gave permission for the work's publication. At the same time he could hardly fail to have been aware that he was concealing from the public one of his most important chamber works. The String Quartet No.5 has so far only been available in one edition in the form of a 1959 pocket score. This new Urtext edition uses the autograph score in the Czech Museum of Music in Prague as its basis as well as the extensive documents in the archive of the Moravian Regional Museum in Brno, which relate to the work.
